Values-in-Education

In Teck Ghee Primary School, a tiered focus approach is taken towards VIA. This is to enable our pupils to be engaged in experiences that will allow them to gain exposure in diverse needs of the community. We hope that our pupils will be able to be involved in meaningful service learning projects as the school’s vision is for them to develop to be responsible citizens.

VIA experiences are also closely linked to the CCE domains which vary from self to community as we feel that this spiral approach will allow pupils to progress at their own pace and there would also be better coherence with regards to all the experiences that they are receiving.

Rationale

Primary 1

VIA Booklets

•       Includes tasks that show how our pupils put our school values into their everyday actions.

•       Activities target at simple Housekeeping skills.

Pupils will learn to be more responsible and have better sense of ownership in managing themselves.

We believe that everyone can contribute and pay it forward no matter how young they are. Hence, this booklet will allow them to understand that they can be more responsible for their own actions.

Collaboration with SPCA

•       Attend talks from SPCA to increase their awareness level

•       Make animal paper origami to support the P2s awareness day

Pupils will have better understanding of some community issues (Animal care) with the increasing number of stray animals. They will get to know how they can play a part and be responsible pet owners should they have one.

We believe that right from Primary 1, our pupils should be exposed to some form of community issue that is within their capacity to understand and contribute in. We believe that this will allow them to nurture into empathetic citizens as they grow up.

Primary 2

VIA Booklets

•       Includes tasks that shows how our pupils put our school values into their everyday actions.

•       Activities target at simple Housekeeping skills that are progressive from what they have done in P1.

Pupils will learn to be more responsible and have better sense of ownership in managing themselves as well as helping others around them. [Eg: Family]

In Primary 2, pupil’s impact level would expand from themselves to helping their immediate environment such as their family. As such, their skills and activities will be targeted at how they can play their part at home by performing simple household chores.

Collaboration with SPCA

·      Pupils will create a pledge against animal abuse/ responsible pet ownership.

·      Pupils will set up booths at the canteen to promote this awareness to the rest of the school.

·      They will be distributing bookmarks, paper origami that they have already made with inspirational messages to the rest of the school.

The P2s will be the school’s ambassadors for promoting the awareness of community issue (Animal care). They will realise that they can contribute back to society in their own little way.

The school believes that progressing from Primary 1, the P2s should be able to contribute slightly more within their area of community focus. Hence, we wanted to give them the ownership of being advocates of responsible pet ownership.

Primary 3

Use Your Hands Campaign

•       Classes are scheduled to clean the canteen tables after the first recess bell goes off

•       They will wipe the tables and proceed to their classes when the 2nd bell is rung.

Pupils will understand how important it is to keep their environment clean and we hope that through this, we can also raise our pupils awareness about food wastage.

The school wanted the P3s to be more aware of the 3Rs and to go one step above recycling. We decided that P3s can be involved in upcycling recyclables materials.

This is integrated with Project Work where pupils will do up an upcycled product and this will be on display for the rest of the school to see and understand how waste materials can be turned into interesting products. Our P3 level would serve as an inspiration to the rest where we want them to think twice before disposing any waste materials.

Upcycling recyclable materials

•       Collect recyclable materials and upcycle it to continue its usage.

•       Integrated with Project work – using design thinking framework

P3s will be the ambassadors of promoting 3Rs and even beyond that where they will upcycle these recyclable products.

Primary 4

Use Your Hands Campaign

•       Classes are scheduled to clean the canteen tables after the first recess bell goes off

•       They will wipe the tables and proceed to their classes when the 2nd bell is rung.

Pupils will understand how important it is to keep their environment clean and we hope that through this, we can also raise our pupils’ awareness about food wastage.

Our P4 level is involved in projects to benefit our immediate neighbourhood, Ang Mo Kio. Hence, we partnered the Town council to help the residents with any of their impending issue.

P4 level is exposed to many different forms of learning opportunities in school. Coding is one example of it. Hence, we wanted to incorporate this into a project that would benefit the neighbourhood as well. In order to raise the awareness of the residents about recycling, we decided to create ‘Talking Bins’ to attract and educate the residents about recycling.

Collaboration with AMK Town council

•       To curb their high rise littering issue, our pupils will help to promote awareness about recycling.

•       Create interactive recycling bins / video awareness about high-rise littering.

•       Project Work

Primary 5

Motivational Posters / Survival Kit

•       Pupils will create motivational posters to encourage their P6 peers to persevere for their PSLE

•       Presented to the P6s before their Prelims

Provide a strong sense of support for their peers in this crucial period of time.

We believe that projects that involves students, doing for students has a great impact and peers are able to influence each other to a very great extent. This will definitely motivate the P6s to excel further.

Collaboration with Council for Third Age; Intergenerational learning workshops

•       Students conduct workshops to engage the elderly [ILP Workshops]

•       Workshops titles are based on ICT as well as Art and Craft subjects.

•       Eg: Smart phones for smart seniors

•       Eg: Fun with Clay

•       Elderly are engaged by the pupils for 2 sessions.

The elderly citizens in the neighbourhood will get to learn a skill from our pupils.

The school is situated in a location where it surrounded by higher percentage of elderly citizens. As such, we wanted our upper primary pupils to focus on the aged within the neighbourhood instead of picking any other organisation at random. Activities such as workshops being organised by students for the elderly will not only benefit the elderly but we believe that the pupils can also learn a lot from them. This two way partnership allows for greater learning to take place and such experiential learning speaks volumes within the child’s holistic development.

Primary 6

Service Learning Projects

•       Classes will be given different topics to choose from

•       Elderly

•       Disabled

•       Environment

•       Animal Protection

•       Gallery walk about these 4 posters in class and pupils will try to convince their classmates on why their chosen topic has higher needs to be addressed.

•       Pupils will be provided with 2 workshops to help them understand their intended audience better

•       Ageing simulation workshop

Simulate the difficulties of an elderly and the common struggles that they face.

•       Blindfold Lunch [1.5h]

Simulate the difficulties of a blind person and their daily struggles

Also get to learn about common eye conditions in Asia as well as eye care tips.

Each class will then embark on one topic and will try to work with an organisation to address the needs of the respective chosen topic.

Pupils will be involved in projects that will impact different communities within the society.

The five years of learning would have allowed our pupils to understand the challenges faced by different communities. We believe that with the knowledge that they have acquired, they will be able to be involved in meaningful projects that will serve the needs of the community.
